Obituary for Evelyn D. Olschewski (Dunn)

Evelyn D. Olschewski (Dunn)
Evelyn (Dunn) Olschewski, 88, of Acton, died peacefully Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at her residence. Evelyn was born in 1923, in Akron, Ohio, and went to school at the University of Akron. As a teenager, she and her family moved briefly to Birobidzhan, which was the site of Russia’s short-lived attempt to create an autonomous Jewish region in Siberia. After college, she accepted a job as a copywriter for Goodyear Tire, and this led to other copywriting jobs. She excelled at her job, and travelled all over the world for business. She moved to Cambridge to work with Avis Rent a Car, and that was when she first met her long-time friend, Miriam. Evelyn tired of working as a copywriter, and at the urging of Miriam accepted a position in the telecommunications department of Mass General Hospital. She eventually became the Director of communications for the entire hospital, and organized the national union of phone administrators. She published and edited the professional magazine for this organization, along with performing her work for MGH.

She met her husband, artist Alfred Olschewski, in Cambridge, and they married in 1968. They moved to Acton, where they remained until his death in 2001. Evelyn and her husband were strong supporters of the arts in Acton, and formed lifelong bonds with others in their Acton neighborhood. Evelyn was very involved with politics, and spent much of her time working for women's rights, and for the Democratic Party. She is an intelligent, involved woman, who has given a great deal to those around her.

Mrs. Olschewski is survived by three cousins, Ronnie Silverstone and Bill Gordon from California, and Jeannie Abbo of Florida; her dear friends Miriam Rykles, Zane Ramos, and Fernanda Riberos; and friends and staff at Concord Park.

A memorial service to be held Tuesday, April 24th at 2:00pm at the Acton Woman's Club, 504 Main Street, (Rte 27) Acton Center. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Acton Center, was private. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
