Obituary for Martha Salena Woliston Zimmerman

Martha Salena Woliston Zimmerman
Zimmerman, Martha Salena Woliston 96, a 75 year resident of Miami where she was an active community member and educator, died with her family by her side on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at her daughter's home in Acton, MA. She was the wife of the late Louis Lee "Duke" Zimmerman.

Born in Springfield, Ohio, in 1925 at the age of 10 Mrs. Zimmerman moved with her family to what was then the small town of Miami. She graduated from Miami Senior High School in 1932, and Florida State University in 1936, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Mrs. Zimmerman taught primarily third and fourth grade in the Miami-Dade County Schools for a career spanning 25 years. She was a longtime active member of the Miami Shores Presbyterian Church and member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.), one of the earliest societies for women. In her own quiet way, Mrs. Zimmerman was a pioneer of today’s modern woman; she was an educator and active in the community while raising her children, entertaining and providing a comfortable home for her family. A fabulous cook, she enjoyed playing bridge and was remembered as an excellent player. She enjoyed a wide circle of friends in the Miami area. Following her husband’s retirement, the couple enjoyed travel together, taking a 3-month trip around the world. They also visited all of the fifty states. After his death, Mrs. Zimmerman’s strong will, determination and sweet disposition allowed her to continue travels and make new friends and acquaintances, with trips to Alaska, Thailand, Morocco, South America, Europe and China, and she planned a South Pacific cruise in order to “have the best view of Halley’s Comet.” She relocated to Acton, MA. over nine years ago in order to be closer to her daughter, Diane, and her family.

The mother of the late Sharon Zimmerman Boswell, Mrs. Zimmerman is survived by a daughter, Diane Zimmerman-Decker and her husband William of Acton, MA.; son-in-law Bill Boswell of Asheville, NC.; grandchildren, Joshua Decker of San Francisco, CA., Kaitlin Decker of Somerville, MA., Chad Boswell and wife Holly and Travis Boswell and wife Shelley, all of Cashiers, NC.; and three great-grandchildren, Braden, Zimmerman and Mary Travis Boswell.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit Monday, Feb. 21st from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton, with a service to remember her life to follow at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Miami Shores Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, 602 Northeast 96th St Miami Shores, FL 33138.
