Adam Mancini, affectionately known to his family as “Sonny,” passed away after a brief illness on May 1, 2020 at the age of 85. Born in Marlborough, MA, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lillian (Greeno) Mancini.
Adam grew up on Maple Street in Maynard and graduated from Maynard High School in 1952, where he excelled on the football field earning the nickname “Atom,” due to his small stature and fast feet. Adam was also an excellent baseball player and was the Captain of his team during his senior year.
After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the US Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Leyte CV-32. Adam worked on the flight deck of his carrier helping to launch planes off the deck, and assisted with their landing. Adam told the story that when his ship was in port in Athens, Greece, his ship's softball team was playing in the championship game while he was stuck on the ship with an illness. After he was cleared by the doctor at the last minute, they urgently flew him by helicopter so he could play in the game, which they won!
During a Navy visit to New York City, Adam along with his shipmates, made an appearance on the television show “I’ve Got a Secret,” where they celebrated the 10 year anniversary of the USS Leyte by presenting a 3,000 lb cake. Also during his time in the Navy, he met his future wife Patricia, and in 1958 they were married and raised 6 children.
Adam spent many years as a driver for the family business his father Joe started; first with GI Joe Taxi, then with Maynard Bus Service. He once had the privilege of driving Caroline Kennedy during a field trip from Concord Academy. Years later, Adam retired as a driver with CASE Collaborative where he drove special needs students.
Adam also had a long career as a referee for football, basketball, baseball, and softball and even officiated a game at the Boston Garden during the championship for Digital Equipment Corporation’s intramural league.
Adam and Patty, along with their children and grandchildren, enjoyed many summers on Cape Cod, and long weekends in York Maine with their friends.
Throughout his life, Adam had a unique sense of humor along with a secret language. Often, he would insert these indescribable words into a conversation to emphasize a story or discussion he was having. You had not experienced the true Adam if you never heard him say: “ta-daaa”, “bding-bdang” “bebeep, babaap, baboop,” and a few others we still haven’t deciphered.
Throughout Adam’s life he always loved to dance, and became a master of the Chicken Dance after many years of practice. Recently, Adam resided at Newbury Court in Concord, MA and soon thereafter, became the official dancer. Any time there was music, he often would grab a member of the staff so he could dance. He would often say, “I can’t help it if I’m the best dancer." He was also a pretty good pool player. Annually, Adam looked forward to his visits to the Sommerfest and Oktoberfest Celebrations in Walpole at the Boylston Schul-Verein, where he would dance as often as he could, often with strangers.
Besides dancing, Adam had another hobby……..eating!!! Adam never refused an opportunity go out to eat with his family to his favorite restaurants, with the Chateau in Waltham being on the top of the list. He also enjoyed home cooked meals made by his children, but he had a sixth sense any time his daughter-in-law Maureen made French Onion Soup, where he would suddenly show up on the door step like a ninja.
Adam loved to visit with his grandchildren but most recently became a great grandfather for the 2nd time, and would walk around Newbury Court showing everyone a picture of his great-grandson, Adam. Adam will be missed by many, but especially by his extended family.
Adam was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Lillian (Greeno), wife Patricia (Zapff), and brother Dominic Mancini. Adam is survived by his brother John and sister-in-law Janice of Shirley MA, brother Joseph and sister-in-law Donna of Malabar FL, and his children; Diane Austin of Maynard, Carol Mancini-Green and her husband Steven of West Boylston, MA, Joseph Mancini of Maynard, Adam Mancini Jr. and Andrew Mancini both from FL, and David Mancini and his wife Maureen from Maynard. Adam also leaves behind 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
The Mancini Family would like to thank the entire staff at Newbury Court for taking such good care of Adam and for your compassion when he departed. They also would like to thank all of the health care workers who have worked tirelessly during this worldwide crisis.
Funeral services and burial in Glenwood Cemetery, Maynard, will be private at this time.
