Obituary

Eleanor Hanson Irion passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on March 27th, 2020.

She was born in Glen Ellyn, IL and had fond memories of Chicago, The Art Institute she attended there and her favorite department store, Marshall Field's.

Art was her joy and she loved creating with oils, watercolor and quilting. She was an avid volunteer when living in Montclair NJ, at the historical Crane House.

Her life was shared with her husband Gene for 67 years. She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia I. Overgaag of Acton, MA and Martha T. Irion of North Pownal, VT. She was the proud Oma to her grandchildren, Molly P. Lindbergh and Thomas W. Overgaag.

In lieu of flowers, please donate on her behalf to your favorite animal charity.

Eleanor will always be in my heart and spirit as a wonderful, kind, caring, artistic and authentic Oma (grandmother). To my best memory, her house in New Jersey was the first place I stayed without my parents. We played with her two black and white cats ( who always tried to bite me but I still chased them around trying to get a hug, unknowing to my Oma), we visited her next-door neighbors who lived in 'the smaller redish house', created imaginary worlds with Oma's 'miniature collections' that she kept on her all-weather patio, ate dinner off the new Barbie plate that Oma so kindly bought for me and learned how to cook 'yellow rice' - otherwise known as Uncle Ben's Jasmine Rice - which soon became one of my favorites and a meal that was only allowed in Oma's house. Oma would drive with Opa from New Jersey to Boston for most holidays. My brother and I would wait all day for them to arrive. Constantly looking out the window in which we could view the top of the driveway, smiling and excitedly running around once we finally saw the white hood of their old Saturn Sedan pull into view. I will never forget, during one visit, how Oma pretended to be in shock when I ate a green bean (without complaining or grimacing) in front of her - her act included a full performance in which she theatrically had a heart attack and ended up on the ground, followed by me proudly and happily pronouncing to my brother what a good eater I was.

I am sad I will no longer be able to make memories with her, but I am happy she is at peace, free of her older and earthly form, reunited with past friends, family, and husband.

Much Love from your granddaughter,

Molly

My mom was always taking a van load of my ballerina friends into NYC to see performances. She would take five of us in to see all the different companies. We would always stop afterwards at a pizza place that was open late and she would treat us.
