Obituary

Thomas Carl Kohls, 62, of Acton, MA died with his family by his side on November 25, 2019. He is the son of the late Vincent and Eda Kohls of Fort Jennings, Ohio.

Tom is survived by his wife, Ruth, children Sara Kohls and husband Jonathan Tobias of South Yarmouth, MA, and Mark Kohls and wife Erin of Merrimack, New Hampshire, grandchild, Henry Vincent, and sisters, Phyllis Boyee, Mary Ann Linton, and Marti Ellerbrock.

Tom loved spending time outdoors and giving back to his community. A former BSA Scoutmaster with Acton Troop 284, he enjoyed camping, hiking, and leading bike trips. He was very active with the Acton Congregational Church as a Church Trustee and member of the Men’s Group. In his free time, he enjoyed visiting National Parks, playing softball, and going for long bike rides.

A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held at the Acton Congregational Church, 12 Concord Road, Acton, MA, on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 2:00 pm with a reception to follow.

Tom was an organ donor. He was able to help 2 other people immediately with his kidneys, and will help all of us with organs donated to research. This living memorial is an immense comfort.

I met Tom when I was asked to reach out to him and a few others to re-establish a boy scout troop in town that needed some leadership. A handful of us got together and we decided that we would band together and make Troop 284 successful. This could not have happened without the commitment that Tom made to the troop. He was an inspiration to all the boys that he help lead into manhood, my two included. I got to befriend him past scouting and beyond as a family friend and shared holidays and special family events with him and Ruth. He was always there to lend a helping hand, listen and support anyway he could. Have shared many tears this past week with the loss of Tom as he was a positive influence to all of us.

I remember many fun outings with Tom (and Ruth). From our initial friendship as an Indian Village neighbor to outings at the Lowell Folk festival and Theatre III performances. Tom was a fountain of knowledge on a wide range of topics. I will miss his stories about camping and hiking. His memory will live on.
