Obituary

Cyril J. Murphy, 93, of Acton, formerly of Marblehead, died peacefully at the Boxborough home of his daughter, Elizabeth Markiewicz, on Friday, October 18, 2019. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth and her husband, John, of Boxborough; John and his wife Desiree, of Williston, VT; Gregory and his wife, Annie, of Oakland, CA; and Paul of Acton; sisters Rose Lamie and Amelia MacNeil; and grandchildren Kimberly, Rhiannon, Allison, Alexandra, Peter J., Peter W., Jenna, and Alex.

Born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, to the late John B. and Helen (Parsons) Murphy, and served honorably in the Canadian Navy during WWII. Mr. Murphy graduated from St. Frances Xavier University with a degree in mathematics. He had a long career in systems analysis and cyber security, working for General Electric, Bell Labs, and GTE, before joining MITRE Corporation, where he worked for 20 years, before retiring in 1998.

He was an avid hiker and enjoyed organizing weekend trips to the White Mountains for friends and colleagues, where he climbed all the 4,000 ft. peaks at least twice. He was a land steward for Acton conservation trails for many years and a communicant at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish. After his retirement, to stay active he joined the Thoreau Club of Concord where he was a proud member of the “Band of Brothers."

Visiting hours are at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave. (Rte 111), Acton, on Friday, October 25th from 4:00-7:00pm. We are so sorry to hear of Cyril's passing. We were his next door neighbors at 7 Elm for 9 years. He was very sweet and friendly to my husband, my girls and myself. He was a good neighbor to us and was very forgiving when we made more noise than we should, especially when the girls were infants! It was always so nice seeing him wearing his cap and a big smile going out for the day. He will be greatly missed. Our love and condolences to his family and friends.

I too want to share the wonderful memories I have of Cyril. Always a smile on his face. Cyril took us (my husband, our two children, and me) hiking in the White Mountains on several occasions. Once we went to his place in Dracut and he had prepared Irish oatmeal; they talked about it for months -- much better than the oatmeal they got at home. My daughter had trouble saying Cyril's name and years after that she would ask me how he was doing. Cyril was special.

I treasure the memory of the Grandfather Hikes he organized for his colleagues, and their children and grandchildren to summits and waterfalls in the White Mountains. It was a grand idea from a grand guy. Happy Trails always, Cyril.

As a neighbor of Cyril's for his over twenty five years, I miss him a lot - his friendly greeting, his smile and more. I wrote about him in the Beacon last week.. One neighbor remembered his cap and another noted his wonderful laugh. He is missed by many at Jefferson Farms. Thinking of his family and hoping they know how many lives he touched.
