Obituary

BOXBOROUGH, MA: Karen E. (Erkkinen) Crowell, 79, a longtime Boxborough resident, passed away peacefully Wednesday October 2, 2019. The beloved wife of more than 60 years to Raymond P. Crowell, she is also survived by their three sons, Scott Matthew Crowell of Springfield, OR, Keith Andrew Crowell of Lunenburg, MA and Glenn Paul Crowell of Marlboro, NH; granddaughters Amy (Crowell) Connors and Ashley Crowell; a great-grandson Maxwell James Connors; 3 sisters, Vivian Ernst and Leila Isomaki both of Indiana, and Diane Haschig of Leominster, MA; two brothers, Rev. Eric Erkkinen of Missouri and Mark Erkkinen of Florida; and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Born in Concord, MA, she was the daughter of the late Paavo and Vieno "Betty" (Maki) Erkkinen. Mrs. Crowell grew up in Maynard and Acton, MA, then moved to the family home built by her father in Boxborough. Following their marriage in 1959, Mr. and Mrs. Crowell lived in Waltham and Acton before settling in Boxborough in 1965. A former secretary at Raytheon, Mrs. Crowell chose to be a stay-at-home mother to focus on her sons while they were young. Her faith and church were instrumental throughout her life, and after her sons were grown she became the administrative assistant at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Acton, where she worked for many years. She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Church choir for over 30 years, and was a past vice president and member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League's local chapter. Mrs. Crowell especially loved time spent in Dennis Port on Cape Cod.

Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Sunday October 6th from 4:00-6:00 P.M. at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. The funeral service will be Monday October 7th at 10:00 A.M. in Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 472 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton, with burial following in South Cemetery, Burroughs Road, Boxborough, The family suggests those who wish make memorial gifts to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, PO Box 986, Acton, MA 01720. Memorial page actonfuneralhome.com

I remember Karen as one with a frequent big smile and kind heart. She was humble and gentle in her work as Church Secretary of Mt Calvary. She had the Christian woman demeanor I read about in Scripture that I would strive for and she modeled.

Jon and I are blessed to have had her in our lives.

I remember Karen as a smiling, cheerful and kind lady in our church office for many years. I particularly remember how she would "round out" the flower orders for our Easter Sunday decorations. I was the " flower lady " at the time and we decorated ( and still do), the Altar with all sorts of potted lilies, daffodils, tulips and hyacinths. Most people donated 1,or maybe 2 plants to beautify our Altar but Betty would sign up for 8-12, which always amazed and delighted me. When I asked her about it she explained that there was no better way to plant her garden each year at the Cape than with flowers that started out celebrating Our Lord's Resurrection. You are in the Great Celebration now Karen! We will miss you!

I spent many nights babysitting all three of my nephews in the 1970’s. I looked forward to Wednesday nights (lasagna) especially. Karen and Ray showed the epítome of marriage, love and life. God bless you Karen. And, God bless you: Ray, Scott. Keith, and Glenn
