Obituary for Howard O. "Howie" Painter, Jr.
Howard O. Howie" Painter, Jr. of Hudson, MA, formerly of Stow and Sandwich, MA and Phoenix, AZ, passed away on September 27, 2019. He was 83.
Howie was born in Hartford, CT to Howard Sr. and Celia Painter. He grew up in Bloomfield, CT, and attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA where he earned a bachelor's in electrical engineering. He was happily married to Carole Flynn of Shrewsbury, MA for more than 60 years. Howie is survived by Carole and their children, Ted and Helen, along with their spouses, Liz and Sean, and 4 loving grandchildren - Katie, Lee, Liam, and Caroline. He has 3 younger sisters, Kathy, Jan, Patty and lots of nieces and nephews.
Howie’s career spanned 35 years and several continents with management and leadership positions in the technology industry from its earliest days. He was a fiercely proud Digital Equipment Corporation alum, starting the first PDP field sales office in Tokyo in the 1960s. Later with GenRad he managed European sales with stops in Munich, Zurich, Phoenix, and San Jose. He retired after completing his tenure as CEO and Chairman of the board for DSP Technologies, Inc., successfully navigating the journey from small startup through NASDAQ public offering. Howie nurtured life long friendships from every phase of his career, and especially enjoyed mentoring young technology entrepreneurs.
In retirement, Howie maintained a close network of WPI alums, labored dawn till dusk in the orchards at Shelburne Farm, and found joy in traveling, skiing, sailing, golfing, and spending time with Carole and his grandchildren in Sandwich on Cape Cod.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday October 2nd at 10:00 A.M. in St. Isidore's Church, 429 Great Road, (Rte 117) Stow, with burial following in Brookside Cemetery, Gleasondale Road (Rte 62) Stow. (There are no visiting hours.)
