Howard O. Howie" Painter, Jr. of Hudson, MA, formerly of Stow and Sandwich, MA and Phoenix, AZ, passed away on September 27, 2019. He was 83.

Howie was born in Hartford, CT to Howard Sr. and Celia Painter. He grew up in Bloomfield, CT, and attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA where he earned a bachelor's in electrical engineering. He was happily married to Carole Flynn of Shrewsbury, MA for more than 60 years. Howie is survived by Carole and their children, Ted and Helen, along with their spouses, Liz and Sean, and 4 loving grandchildren - Katie, Lee, Liam, and Caroline. He has 3 younger sisters, Kathy, Jan, Patty and lots of nieces and nephews.

Howie’s career spanned 35 years and several continents with management and leadership positions in the technology industry from its earliest days. He was a fiercely proud Digital Equipment Corporation alum, starting the first PDP field sales office in Tokyo in the 1960s. Later with GenRad he managed European sales with stops in Munich, Zurich, Phoenix, and San Jose. He retired after completing his tenure as CEO and Chairman of the board for DSP Technologies, Inc., successfully navigating the journey from small startup through NASDAQ public offering. Howie nurtured life long friendships from every phase of his career, and especially enjoyed mentoring young technology entrepreneurs.

In retirement, Howie maintained a close network of WPI alums, labored dawn till dusk in the orchards at Shelburne Farm, and found joy in traveling, skiing, sailing, golfing, and spending time with Carole and his grandchildren in Sandwich on Cape Cod.

Howie was a dear friend and fraternity brother at WPI. Afra and I enjoyed being together with him and Carole on several happy occasions after graduation. He will be greatly missed, and we send sincere condolences to all his family and friends. May he Rest In Peace.

My sincere condolences to Carole. I knew Howie at WPI and worked with him at DEC. In recent years, our annual meetings of the "old geezers" in Southern California and Arizona were far more than a reunion. My wife, Val, passed away last year and we were fortunate to have had sixty years together. I felt as though a part of my soul had been ripped out as I am sure that Carole can attest to. My prayers are for Carole and the family to remember the fun times. It softens the grieving process and warms the heart.

I have known Howie since 6th grade. And we had the good fortune of being in high school, WPI and PKT fraternity together. So it was special when I was asked to be his best man. Over the years Howie, Carole, Connie and I have many fun moments including some that I cannot tell as I am sworn to secrecy.

Howie had a love of sports and played soccer, baseball and basketball in high school as well as soccer at WPI. He also loved to debate and would often take up the opposite side on a subject just to keep the conversation going.

He will surely be missed.

Howie and Carol have been such a big part of Copeland-Painter family gatherings for over 28 years!. Howie was such a great support to children throughout his life. I think my fondest memory of Howie, was his giving us all a family hay ride at Shelburn Farm. Spending Thanksgiving with Howie and Carol in Flagstaff with all the family was also a special treat! He will be greatly missed!
