Obituary

Gary R. Greenaway, 73, a lifelong Maynard resident, died peacefully Mon. Sept. 23, 2019 with his family at his side at the Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, MA.

Born in Concord and raised in Maynard, MA he was the son of the late George Robert “Bob” and Thelma (Dawson) Greenaway. Gary is survived by his two brothers David Greenaway and wife Carolyn "Lyn" of Cypress, TX and Richard Greenaway and wife Rachelle "Shelly" of Maynard; his sister Lori Byrne and husband Gerald "Gerry" of Maynard; his only surviving aunt, Lois Baker; and many devoted nieces, nephews and their families.

Gary was the #1 fan of the Maynard sports teams from early childhood and was an icon at all Maynard sporting events, never missing a game. He knew everyone around town, and everyone knew and loved Gary. For the past few years he took up knitting as a hobby, donating over 70 hats to the St. Francis House in Boston. He enjoyed time with his family including vacations in Florida and camping trips to Maine. Gary adored all of his great nieces and nephews, smothering them with hugs and kisses. He will long be remembered for his kindness and big heart.

Visiting hours are Thurs. Sept. 26th from 4-7pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. The funeral service will be held on Fri. Sept. 27th at 10:00 A.M. at the Acton Funeral Home, with burial following with his parents Glenwood Cemetery, Great Rd (Rte 117) Maynard.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to one of three suggested charities: Minuteman ARC, 35 Forest Ridge Rd, Concord, MA 01742; Friends of Maynard Football, c/o Tim Lawton, 11 Michael Rd, Maynard, MA 01754; or to Till, attn. Carol Perkins, 20 Eastbrook Rd, Suite 201, Dedham, MA 02026-2075, please add “to benefit 9 Reo Rd” on the memo line.

I am 77 years old now but grew up in Maynard and played sports at Alumni Field. I was just telling my wife about Gary last week. I prepared the Little League field for all of the games. So, I got to talk and be with Gary pretty much every day. All of my memories are exactly as stated in his obituary. He was such a warm, smiling presence. I am happy to hear that all of his ensuing years were very happy and he was able to be with his family. Gary is definitely one of the warm memories that I have of Maynard. Blessings to all.

Dear Greenaway Family,
We were very sorry to hear about Gary's passing. While it has been many years since we had our Memorial Day celebrations, we have very fond memories of the extended Dawson and Geenaway gatherings at the Greenaways, and the big smile and warm greetings we always got from Gary!
Our best to all the Greenaways and Dawsons,
Jim Dawson and all of the Bob and Barbara Dawson family

I met Gary shooting baskets at Joey Eannuzzo's house on Parker St, I think I was 12. When Gary missed, we called him Dubber, he didn't like that very much. But when I missed and he called me Dubber, and smiled that giant smile, then it was OK. When he got a basket, we had a group hug, again that giant smile. For that moment we were the same, just kids shooting baskets.
40 years later at Alumni after a little league practice, I threw a few pitches to Gary until he got a good hit. He ran around the bases while I chased him with the ball until he stomped on home plate. I said go tell Mommy you got a home run and we have to go get an ice cream. He was back in a flash smiling that giant smile. Of course, we had to go to the house first to see Mommy.
Thank you Thelma for the gift of Gary.

To the Entire Greenaway Family; Gary was a Maynard icon. So many memories come back to me from my time in Maynard. He was always happy, smiling and all pumped up for Maynard football games. May the memories help to reflect in this time of sorrow. My deepest and heartfelt sympathy to you all.
