John Francis Zettler, affectionately known as "Jack," died peacefully at his Stow home June 15, 2019. He was 84. He is survived by his wife Carolyn (Doe) Zettler; children and their families: Christine Dresselhaus, husband Rick and their children Joe, Erica, Carly and Lauren; Elizabeth Carol Zettler and husband Lou Carbone; Michael Zettler, wife Susan and their son Maxwell; Barbara Wright and her children Hannah and Zachary; Laura Zettler, husband Conor O’Loughlin and their children Eliza and Finn; former wife Anne Zettler; and a large extended family. He was predeceased by sons Todd A. Zettler and John A. Roche, a sister Mary Lou Weber and a brother Edward Zettler.

Some of Jack’s interests and passions included engineering, reading, learning, teaching, poetry, astronomy, physics, hiking, skiing, and sailing, but above all else he loved his family most. Jack was cherished by his large family and his many friends. He will be missed terribly by us all.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family Tuesday June 18th from 4:00-7:00pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. The memorial service will be held Sunday June 30th at 3:00P.M. at the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton, 353 Great Road (Rte 117 on the Common) in Stow.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton, 353 Great Rd, Stow, MA 01775, or to Friends of Acadia, PO Box 45, Bar Harbor, Maine 04609, online at

I did not know your loved one, but I am so sorry for your loss. The majority of us are not strangers to loss. Many who have experienced loss find these practical suggestions helpful. Allow yourself time to grieve, talk about your thoughts and feelings, accept help, draw closer to God, visualize the resurrection. Doing these things has given many people, myself included, the strength to go on. My sincere condolences at this difficult time.

Barbara and family, Jack always treated us with such kindness at gatherings at your home. He was quick to engage in intellectual conversation, particularly about anything related to the environment and engineering. We will think of him with fond memories. Sending love.

I met Jack through Small Group Ministry years ago and always so appreciated his deep thoughtfulness and his commitment to FPC. He always remembered my name and I always felt so welcomed by him. Deeply missed. Holding you in my thoughts, Caroline. Trisha Guditz

Oh, Jack. We will miss you, your wisdom and many tales of adventure. I’m so grateful that I got to know you, even for just a short time. One of the best memories my family and I ever have is from last summer with you, Caroline and your beautiful family in Acadia. It was a gorgeous afternoon sitting on the dock and listening to your adventures of hiking the mountains while the kids swam, literally with mackerels and lobsters. We will always cherish that memory. Your vitality and zest for adventures and knowledge will forever live on in the many you inspired. May you now rest, my friend, and may Caroline find comfort in the memories of your awesome life together.
