Obituary for Gladys T. (Heron) Gallagher

Gladys T. (Heron) Gallagher, 85, of Shirley, MA, formerly of Maynard, MA, died unexpectedly Sunday May 19, 2019 at the Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, MA. She was the beloved wife of the late Paul C. Gallagher, to whom she was married almost 40 years at the time of his passing in January, 1997.

Born and raised in Fort Augustus, Prince Edward Island, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Mullen) Heron. Mrs. Gallagher moved to Massachusetts to further her education, and graduated from the Shepard-Gill School of Nursing in Boston. A Licensed Practical Nurse, she worked for many, many years at the Rivercrest Deaconess Nursing Home in Concord before retiring.

Mrs. Gallagher met her future husband, Paul, at a dance at Revere Beach. They married in May 1958 and lived in Medford for a time before settling in Maynard in 1963, where they raised their children. They loved long walks along the Cape Cod Canal, the beach, dancing and time spent together. An avid reader, Mrs. Gallagher enjoyed winters in Bushnell, Florida and was a die-hard Red Sox fan. She wouldn’t miss a game and refused to take calls when games were in progress. Her family loved taking her to see the Sox play at Fenway Park and Jet Blue Stadium.

She is survived by 5 children: Sheila Ray and husband Tommy of Weymouth, Paula Amante and husband Paul of Maynard, Joanne LoChiatto and husband Ron of Maynard, Andrea Porter of Rehoboth and fiancé Randy Tripp, John Gallagher and wife Annette of Shirley, with whom she made her home for over 7 years. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren; sisters-in-law Ruth & Bernadette Heron of P.E.I., Canada; and many nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by brothers Howard, Louis and Ivan Heron, and sisters Myrtle Pirkola, Margaret Driscoll, Viola Beagan and Pearl McShane.

Visiting hours will he held Thursday, May 23rd from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday May 24th at 8:30 A.M. in St. Bridget’s Church, 1 Percival St., Maynard with burial in Glenwood Cemetery, 254 Great Road (Rte 117 Entrance) Maynard.
