ACTON, MA: Mack D. O’Brien, Jr., passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 26, 2019 surrounded by his family. He was 75.

Mr. O’Brien was the husband of the late Lucia (Madigan) O’Brien, to whom he was married almost 50 years at the time of her passing on December 12, 2016. He is survived by their children and families: Patrick O’Brien and wife Jennie of Hanover, MA, Andrew O’Brien and wife Helena of Franklin, MA, and Betsy Sullivan and fiancé Jamison Merriam of Acton, MA. He was affectionately known as “Grampy” and “Biggie” to his grandchildren: Leah, Sam, Jack, Ellie, Maggie, Brian & John.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky and raised in Franklin, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Mack D. and Gertrude (Winkler) O’Brien. Mr. O’Brien lived in Nashville, TN for a time before graduating from Webb School, then earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Yale. He was employed for 38 years at M.I.T.’s Draper Lab in Cambridge where he was a Director before retiring.

Mr. O’Brien enjoyed golfing and cooking, and loved time spent with his grandkids. He especially looked forward to vacations at the family camp on East Grand Lake in Weston, Maine, where the family enjoyed tubing, water sports and relaxing. He also loved animals, especially his “granddogs” Dublin, Rosie and Jazz.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours Saturday, March 2nd from 8:30-11:00 A.M. at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. so sorry to hear of Mac's passing. I always enjoyed getting the boat ready for he and Lucia and delivering it to the point.
If only one could tap those big hemlock trees and relive the good
times had by them . sail on Mac. All the best to the family, Willy

I have a lot of pleasant memories of times with Mack. We worked together, on and off, at Draper for about 35 years. I remember the office we shared in IL6 when he first joined the Lab. In the summer we had a choice of soot through the open window or closing the window and suffering with the heat - no AC. There were the lunches with the DSRV folks often at the European but later at someone's nearby apartment. There were the evenings when Lucia would be involved with the local theatre. We would go to the show then back to their home to sing old country songs while Lucia played the piano. Then of course there was the field assignment in San Diego when we lived in the same apartment complex so would car pool to work leaving a car for the wives and boys. My son Stephen still remembers Andrew and Patrick. The years have gone bye but Mack and Lucia have left behind some wonderful memories for a lot of people. Roger Medeiros

The world was a better place for having Mack in it! He was always kind and the spirit of a place was always elevated by him being in it. I met him in my Draper days and was cheered by his presence. I always looked forward to seeing him at Draper events and playing golf with our group of retirees as well as our martini luncheons. He never complained about his struggle with cancer and always spoke of the happy times with his family. I can only imagine the void he leaves behind in your lives and hope that you can fill it over time with all the wonderful memories you shared. My love goes out to you all!
