Obituary for Mack D. O'Brien, Jr.

ACTON, MA: Mack D. O’Brien, Jr., passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 26, 2019 surrounded by his family. He was 75.

Mr. O’Brien was the husband of the late Lucia (Madigan) O’Brien, to whom he was married almost 50 years at the time of her passing on December 12, 2016. He is survived by their children and families: Patrick O’Brien and wife Jennie of Hanover, MA, Andrew O’Brien and wife Helena of Franklin, MA, and Betsy Sullivan and fiancé Jamison Merriam of Acton, MA. He was affectionately known as “Grampy” and “Biggie” to his grandchildren: Leah, Sam, Jack, Ellie, Maggie, Brian & John.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky and raised in Franklin, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Mack D. and Gertrude (Winkler) O’Brien. Mr. O’Brien lived in Nashville, TN for a time before graduating from Webb School, then earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Yale. He was employed for 38 years at M.I.T.’s Draper Lab in Cambridge where he was a Director before retiring.

Mr. O’Brien enjoyed golfing and cooking, and loved time spent with his grandkids. He especially looked forward to vacations at the family camp on East Grand Lake in Weston, Maine, where the family enjoyed tubing, water sports and relaxing. He also loved animals, especially his “granddogs” Dublin, Rosie and Jazz.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours Saturday, March 2nd from 8:30-11:00 A.M. at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. All are invited to a gathering to follow at 11:30 A.M. at the Red Raven Restaurant, 3 Nagog Park (off Rte 2A) in Acton. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery in Acton Center is private at a later date.
