Obituary for Joseph William McGinty

Joseph William McGinty, 94, born in Cambridge, raised in South Portland, ME, spent 30 years in Acton where he raised his family and most recently of Maynard, passed unexpectedly at the Emerson Hospital in Concord on Monday, February 18, 2019. He was the husband of the late Margaret M. (Collins) McGinty.

A Mechanical Engineer with Raytheon for 29 years prior to his retirement, he also worked on the Apollo Space Program in the 1960's. Joe was an active member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Acton where he taught CCD, helped with transportation for those needing rides and served as a Eucharistic Minister. In his younger days he played golf, tended various vegetable gardens and enjoyed ice skating, something he did well into his 80’s. Joe was also a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, where he spent time at the Pentagon coding and decoding messages.

He is survived by his daughter Ann McGinty & husband David Weigel of North Andover; 4 sons, Brian & wife Lillian of Lawrence; David of Maynard; Stephen of Hadley; Kevin & wife Karen of Randolph, VT; and 2 grandchildren, Aidan and Kira Woog McGinty. He was predeceased by his wife, parents and 3 sisters.

Visiting hours Monday, Feb 25th 4-7pm at Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave. (Rt 111) Acton. Funeral Mass Tuesday, Feb 26th at 10am in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 89 Arlington St., Acton, followed by burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, West Acton.
