Russell L. Vigliotti, 40, of Shirley, MA passed away unexpectedly due to complications related to an upper respiratory infection on February 4, 2019 at UMass Medical Center in Worcester. Born in Leominster, he was the son of the late Louis H. Vigliotti, Jr. and Grace Coy.

Russell was known for his kindness, generosity, and easy-going nature. He developed an appreciation for nature and outdoor activities as an active participant in the Boy Scouts as a child, which appreciation he carried through into adulthood. He enjoyed hiking, kayaking, camping and other outdoor activities. At the same time, he was an avid gamer. Many hikers in north central Massachusetts know Russell as the founder/leader of the "Wednesday Night Hikers" at Wachusett Mountain, where he introduced others to the joy of nature and exploring the outdoors.

Russell attended Acton-Boxborough High School. He was the owner/operator of the family business, Middlesex Water Service, which his father and grandfather had operated before him. Russell was happy and proud to take the helm of the family business and worked hard in recent years to expand the business.

Russell’s dog, Rex, was always by his side, whether riding next to Russell as he drove to a job site for work or climbing Mt. Washington.

Russell is survived by his mother, Grace (Coy) Fernlund and her current husband Michael; siblings, Valerie Vigliotti, Jeffrey & wife Jessica Vigliotti, Richard Vigliotti & fiancée Michael Stantial, Vanessa Vigliotti & fiancée John Fenton; and 2 nieces, Lindsay & Sophia Vigliotti.

His family will receive guests on Friday, February 15th from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. All are invited to attend his funeral service at the funeral home on Saturday, February 16th at 10:00am followed by burial in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord. Memorial donations may be made to the Appalachian Mountain Club at AMC, 10 City Square, Boston, MA 02129 or Memorial page:

Russell was a joy to work with, as was his father Lou. I was stunned and deeply saddened first by Lou's death and now his son's. It's hard to comprehend. All I know is that he was charming, knowledgeable, honest, capable and we felt fortunate to have both Lou and then Russell working in our home. Our deepest and heart-felt condolences.

The Vogliottis, father-in-law and son, took care of us-installed our system and kept us up and running. They were always so decent and kind and a joy to work with. Just a few moths ago, before Christmas, I causes a spout to break four pressure pump. At 9PM, on a Sunday, Russell came to the rescue- form his home, to his truck, to our home in Lincoln and back to the shop for another part. He was so good-natured about it all. He finished the job after 11PM, and never a grumble. Wow! My sympathies to his family and friends and Rex. The bit we got to know of him is the tip of the iceberg, I am sure. God bless this kind and decent man.

Grace, Valerie, Vanessa, Richards and Jeffrey. It is difficult to express the profound sadness we are all feeling for you and for Russell. I remember Russell and all of you coming to our home for Easter and family reunions. Russell was a quiet child, sweet and smart. I found him taking the screen off of my front storm door, he unscrewed all the little screws that held in the screen. Early signs of good eye hand coordination to eventually put to use later in the family business.
His love and appreciation for nature and the environment says alot about who Russell was.
It is hard to accept we have lost three family members since July, Barbara's Edward, Thanksgiving day my sister Judi and now your dear Russell. I believe his Dad, grandparents, and cousin Edward met him with open arms. When our day comes we will see his sweet face once again.
Love and prayers to all of you , keep his memories alive. Joanne Gibson Schorn and Auntie Frances

We have so many happy memories of times spent with Russ, and feel profound sadness he is no longer here. We spent many hours on the trails together and he lives on in our cherished memories. Russ was a good and kind man. Our sincere condolences to Russ’ family, Rex and his other friends. We wish you all comfort in your memories.
