WEST YARMOUTH – Joseph James Cooney, III, 84, of West Yarmouth, formerly of Acton, MA, died peacefully of cancer on October 24, 2018, at home, surrounded by his family.

Born in Saint Louis, MO to Helen Virginia (Hardy) Cooney and Joseph James Cooney, Jr., he attended Saint Louis University where in 1955 he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Following graduation he took a position at Bendix Corporation in Mishawaka, Indiana and married Barbara Ann Weissenberg with whom he had a daughter. Following Barbara’s death, he met and married Patricia Mary Coyne (Trisha) with whom he had four sons and one daughter. During his career at Bendix he attended graduate school at night and earned a Masters in Electrical Engineering from Notre Dame University and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Michigan State University. He and Trisha were active members of Little Flower Catholic Parish in South Bend, Indiana where he was involved with church leadership, bringing liturgical practices into the home, and the Cursillo movement.

In 1968 Joe moved his family to Acton, MA when he took a position at Raytheon Labs in Bedford working on microprocessors in the missile guidance division. In addition to raising his six children, he taught college algebra and microcomputer design, volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 32, held leadership positions on the Saint Elizabeth of Hungary parish council, taught in the catechumenate program for over 20 years and worked on archdiocesan development projects at the parish level. Joe and Trisha also volunteered at the Community Supper program.

In 2000 Joe and Trisha retired to Cape Cod where they enjoyed walks, travel, and watching their family grow, welcoming nine grandchildren who visited frequently, Paul, Margaret, Sam, Robert, Mark, Sierra, Erin, Ashley, and Mary. In 2011 they gathered with their family to celebrate 50 years of marriage. Joe enjoyed his Men’s Cooking Class at the Yarmouth Senior Center and regular work-outs at Planet Fitness.

In addition to his wife, Trisha, Joe is survived by Cathleen, (Joe Wiehagen), Cheverly, MD; Joseph Cooney, IV, (Lorelei Preuitt), Acton; Peter, (Carol Lucas), South Yarmouth; John (Laurie Huddleston), of Littleton; Theresa (Gregg Timony), Carlsbad, CA; and Timothy (Rene Taylor), West Yarmouth.
