Life Story of Maurice W. “Moe” Joyal

Maurice Wilfred "Moe" Joyal, 88, a longtime resident of Acton, MA, died on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

Maurice was born and raised in Claremont, NH, son of the late Hyacinth and Alice (Dubois) Joyal. He attended local schools and was a 1948 graduate of St. Mary’s H.S. in Claremont, NH. He later received his Bachelor’s Degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He spent 36 years working in defense systems research as an electronical engineer for Sylvania/GTE Company until his retirement in 1990. He was an active member of St. Elizabeth’s of Hungary Parish in Acton, MA and for 40 years assisted in the general maintenance and grounds care at the parish facility. Both Maurice and his wife Pauline have resided in Acton the past 61 years where they proudly raised their family.

Moe is survived by his beloved wife of almost 64 years, Pauline (Gendron); his 5 children, Suzanne Gallo and husband John of San Jose, CA, Louise Spann and husband David of Acton, MA, Michelle Joyal of Acton, MA, Paul Joyal and wife Lori of Sudbury, MA and Richard Joyal of Acton, MA. He also leaves his brother, Rene Joyal and wife Beverly of Nashua, NH; his 7 grandchildren and one great grandson, Michael and Lauren Gallo of San Jose, CA, Jillian Oman and husband Craig of Acton, MA, Courtney Barrieault and her son Trey of Acton, MA, Evan Spann and wife Amanda of Boxborough, MA, Alex Joyal of Nashua, NH, Elijah Joyal of Hudson, MA along with many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Gloria Rivard of Claremont, NH.

Maurice or “Moe” as he was fondly referred to was admired and loved by all who loved and knew him. He enjoyed nature and astronomy in his spare time. His talent as a “handyman” and willingness to help anyone with a task was always appreciated. His passion was his family first and his faith. A legacy of love, devotion and a giving spirit will be cherished by all.


Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Friday, Aug. 17th from 5:00 to 7:00pm in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 89 Arlington St., Acton. The services will begin with the Reception Rite at the church entrance at 5:00pm followed by the Vigil Liturgy, with visiting to follow until 7:00pm. His funeral Mass will be celebrated in the church on Saturday, Aug. 18th at 11:00am. A private burial will be held at a later date in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Acton. Funeral arrangements are under the thoughtful guidance of the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Avenue, Acton, MA 01720.
