Obituary for Sophie P. (Novick) Cannella
STOW, MA: Sophie P. Cannella, 88, of Stow, Massachusetts, died peacefully at her home on June 15, 2018. She was born in Maynard, Massachusetts on April 29, 1930, to Aleksander and Agnes (Matuszek) Novick. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, John Cannella, her parents, brothers Henry, Frank, and George Novick, and sisters Jane Seaward and Laura Lopez. She is survived by her daughter Emilia Cannella and her husband Jeffrey Kotter, granddaughter Stella Kotter, and a large extended family including beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families.
Sophie was raised in Maynard and, after her marriage, lived the remainder of her life in Stow. She graduated from Maynard High School and, until the birth of her daughter, worked as a proofreader at the Colonial Press in Clinton, a job that she loved due to the camaraderie of her colleagues and the subject matter of her work. For most of her life, a book was never far from hand, and she had an insatiable curiosity about the natural and spiritual worlds. Her faith was unshakeable, and she particularly enjoyed spending time at the ocean with family and friends, where she was at one with the world in all of its splendor. She also firmly believed in the transformative power of education and was a strong advocate of women. Sophie was absolutely delighted to share her knowledge and experience with her beloved granddaughter, Stella, and she will be dearly missed.
Family and friends are invited to visiting hours Sunday, June 24th from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Avenue (Route 111), Acton. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, June 25th at 10:00 am in St. Isidore’s Church, 429 Great Road (Route 117), Stow.
