What Floyd Meant to Me

I was very nervous the first time Blaise took me to meet Floyd. He was sophisticated, intelligent, and a very successful surgeon.  I was so intimidated.  But from the first moment I met him, I never felt nervous again. He welcomed me into his life from that very first moment with such warmth and kindess.  I was so lucky to have been "adopted" as his daughter.

Floyd had such a bright smile and sincere laugh. He was kind, respectful, warm and most of all accepting.  He always made me feel special and valued just as I was – faults and all. He gave me  unconditional support and love which meant so very much to me.  He took me on ski trips and bought me my first pair of ski boots.  When I had been skiing all of two days and Blaise left me stranded at the top of a steep black ski trail with nothing but 2-foot tall moguls to see for miles, Floyd stayed with me and helped me navigate my way down.  Floyd enjoyed life and spending time with his family.  He enjoyed taking us out to fine restaurants. He was adventurous and took us on many exciting trips. But best of all were all the interesting conversations we had.  Floyd was easy going- at least with his family. No matter how difficult or crazy we were, nothing fazed Floyd- he just went with the flow.  No matter what we were doing, he was there for us.   He meant so much to me and I will always cherish my time with him.  I was so lucky to have him in my life.

He was also a wonderful grandfather.  I am so grateful my kids had someone who loved and supported them no matter what.  Someone who told them that they could do whatever they set their minds to.  He went to sporting events and performances to cheer them on.  He made 3-D Pooh Bear Birthday cakes, wore a goofy napkin hat on a Disney Cruise, read stories, and spoiled them rotten at the toy store.

Floyd was a wonderful man, father, and grandpa.  He helped others his whole life, whether it was serving his country in Vietnam or saving lives as a surgeon.  He worked hard and laughed a lot!  I love him and admire him more than words can express. I am thankful for having him in our lives and I will miss him very much.
