Obituary for Belinda J. Brooks

Belinda J. Brooks
Belinda J. Brooks, 57, of Garnet Valley, PA, formerly of Maynard, MA, died Tuesday May 22, 2018 in Newark, Delaware. She was the beloved wife of 29 years to John A. Harvison.

Born in Concord, MA and raised in Maynard, she was the daughter of Barbara (Mitzcavitch) Brooks of Maynard and the late Robert E. Brooks, who died in 2013. Belinda was a graduate of Maynard High School, where she was a member of the track team and the marching band. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from UMass Amherst and was employed by DuPont from 1982-83. She met her husband, John, in Memphis while both were working for DuPont. Following their marriage they settled in the Delaware-Pennsylvania area where they resided throughout their marriage.

Belinda completed her MBA at Columbia University and continued her career with W.R. Grace in Baltimore, MD, then as a financial analyst at ARCO Chemical Company. She also worked part-time assisting with her mother’s tax preparation business.

Belinda had many interests. She loved gardening and landscape design, nurturing a wide variety of plants in gardens she tended. A dedicated runner, Belinda was proud to complete the Boston Marathon in the 100th anniversary year in 1996. She also enjoyed hiking, reading, crafts, and travel with her husband and family. Belinda was a huge fan of the Boston Celtics. She loved all animals and fostered shelter animals for a time. Fascinated with monkeys, she amassed a large collection of stuffed toy monkeys. A musician, Belinda played the organ, and she and her father especially loved time spent playing the accordion together. She was also a general contractor, and designed and built two homes and advised family on their projects.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by a sister, Susan Wheeler of Weirs Beach, NH; a brother Steven Brooks of Maynard; niece and nephew Melissa Wheeler of Dover, NH and Craig Wheeler of Las Vegas; uncle Andrew Mitzcavitch; aunt Mary Allan; mother-in-law Gloria Harvison; brothers-in-law Joseph and Charles Harvison; and cousins and their families.

Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral Mass to be celebrated Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 10:00am in St. Bridget’s Church, 1 Percival Street, Maynard, with burial following in Glenwood Cemetery, Great Road (Rte 117) Maynard. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial gifts to the MSPCA-Angell, 350 South Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02130, also online at mspca.org. Memorial page actonfuneralhome.com
