Obituary for Sergius James Bernard

Sergius James Bernard, 84, of Stow, MA, formerly of Wenham, MA, passed away peacefully with loving family by his side at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence in Wayland, MA on Thursday, May 17, 2018.

Sergius leaves behind his beloved wife of 51 years, Nancy May (Cole) Bernard of Stow, MA and his three children, Brian Bernard of Essex, MA, Mary Savin and husband, Peter, of Fayetteville, AR, Keith E. Bernard and partner April Wells of Acton, MA (former spouse, Kerry Bernard of Maynard, MA). He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Nicholas Savin of Chicago, IL, Jacob Savin and Joseph Savin, both of Fayetteville, AR, and Brenna Bernard of Maynard, MA; his siblings, Jude Bernard and wife Nilda of Woodstock, CT, James Bernard and wife Sharon of Montpelier, VT, Virginia Kenny of Texas, his sister-in-law, Lynn Bernard of Sanibel, FL, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Stephen Bernard of Marstons Mills, MA.

Born on St. Patrick’s Day 1934 in Hartford, CT, the son of the late Sergius Joseph and Mary (McDonough) Bernard. Sergius spent his youth in Massachusetts and New Hampshire before receiving his Bachelor in engineering degree from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN. He continued his education earning his MBA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. After serving in the Air Force, he was a career employee of the Kodak Co. and its subsidiary, Eastman Gelatine of Peabody, MA, retiring with over 30 years of service in finance as its Treasurer. He resided in Stow the past 8 years and spent 30 plus years living on the North Shore in Hamilton and Wenham, MA.

Sergius was a man of deep faith, a loyal husband and father who enjoyed his retirement with occasional travels with his wife Nancy and keeping tabs on the Boston sports scene. He was a stalwart supporter of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. While proudly following the lives of his children, he was probably most proud of his grandchildren and was their biggest fan in every endeavor and accomplishment – large or small. Sergius was a generous, kind hearted man with a warm smile who could impress even his grandchildren with his sweet tooth and love of ice cream.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, May 24, 2018 from 4 to 8pm at Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rt 111) Acton. The funeral Mass is Friday, May 25, 10am in St. Bridget’s Church, Percival St, Maynard, MA. Urn burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Stow, MA.
