Obituary for Hugo L. Stapel, Jr.

Mr. Hugo L. Stapel, Jr., age 83, of Boxborough Massachusetts passed away peacefully on Friday, February 2, 2018 at his home after a long illness. Hugo, born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1934, was eldest son of Hugo Sr. and Mary (Knowles) Stapel. He graduated from Bromfield Academy in Harvard Massachusetts in 1953. Hugo attended Florida State University while serving in the Air Force from 1957 to 1961, when he was honorably discharged. He married Sara Thaxter Chevers in 1968. Hugo and Sara have two children, Dr. Jennifer L. Stapel-Wax of Atlanta Georgia and Mr. Jonathan B. Stapel, of Leicester Massachusetts.

Mr. Stapel worked for 18 years at Dennison Corporation, in the Holiday Division in Maynard, MA and Assistant Product Manager of the International Division in Framingham, MA . Following that, he worked in several retail establishments in Acton and Boxborough until 2003. Hugo was known to have loved to garden and work in his yard. He was a collector of lighthouse memorabilia and travelled throughout New England visiting lighthouse sites. He was a lifelong stamp collector. He enjoyed music, reading, vacationing, and camping with family. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Hugo was a proud Finn who was well known in the local community. He has been a resident of Boxborough in his present home for five decades. Hugo was a very caring , generous, and gentle man, who will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sara T. (Chevers) Stapel, his children Jennifer Stapel-Wax and Jonathan Stapel, their spouses Rebecca M. Stapel-Wax and Heather Stapel and grandchildren Katheryn and Kyle Stapel and Caleb and Oren Stapel-Wax. He also survived by his siblings Richard (Ginger) Stapel, Karen Leonard and Margaret (William) Balduf as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and their families. He is predeceased by his sister Susan Hemingway.

Calling hours will held at Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Avenue (Rte 111) Acton, on Wednesday, February 7 from 4 to 8 pm. A service will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 164 Newtown Road, Acton, MA on Thursday, February 8 at 10:30. Collation will immediately follow the service. A private burial service at South Cemetery in Boxborough will follow for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, 164 Newtown Road, Acton, MA 01720 or Care Dimensions Hospice Care, 75 Sylvan St,Ste. B-102, Danvers, MA 01923. May his memory be a blessing.
