Obituary for David I. Higgins

MAYNARD: David I. Higgins, 86, a lifelong Maynard resident, died peacefully Monday, November 20, 2017 at the Lowell General Hospital. He was born in Concord, one of eleven children of the late John T. and Florence (Anderson) Higgins. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Poteet of Williamsburg, MI; his dear friend Melissa J. Tomyl and her two children; his lifelong friend Vic Tomyl; and step-children Billy Tobey, Karen Costa, Michael Tobey and their families. He was the brother of the late William, Walter, Edward, John, Charles, Timothy and Richard Higgins, Catherine Boyle and Mary Ellen Higgins. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and their families.

A graduate of Maynard High School, Mr. Higgins graduated Summa Cum Laude from Tufts University and served honorably as a Corporal in the US Army in Germany during the Korean War. A tax preparer for local clients, he was employed by the US Postal Service until his retirement then went to work for the Maynard schools. He was a life member and Past Commander of the Frank J. Demars American Legion Post #235 in Maynard, where he served as Financial Officer for 30 years. He was also a life member of the Maynard Lodge of Elks #1568 and member of the VFW Post #1812. Highly intelligent and quirky, Mr. Higgins had an amazing memory and a love of world and American history, reading and crossword puzzles. He also especially enjoyed the company of his step-son Billy's dog, Max. Mr. Higgins is remembered as an "old school" gentleman: polite, considerate, gentle and generous.
