June 17, 1923 -- September 25, 2015

Kenneth S. Thomson, M.D., age 92, died peacefully Friday, September 25th, 2015. He was a former long-time resident of Penfield, NY where he was in family medical practice for 40 years. During this time, he was also on the staff at Genesee Hospital in Rochester, NY. A graduate of Rutgers University and Cornell Medical School, he served honorably in the US Navy during WWII, making many  trips across the Pacific and transporting troops to the beach in the second wave of the Okinawa battle.


Dr. Thomson especially loved to travel the world with his wife, Shirley, and spent time sailing with friends and family. He also enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren how to sail.  Ken and Shirley were married for 62 years, and built a summer home on Clear Lake in Jefferson County, NY, with Ken doing much of the labor himself including the electrical and plumbing work. In 2004, Ken and Shirley downsized from the house in Penfield where they lived for 50 years to a patio home in Macedon, NY. They moved to Acton, MA in January, 2015 to be near their two daughters.

Kenneth Thomson was the beloved husband of 62 years to Shirley (Gray) Thomson; father of Richard Thomson & wife Gwenyth of Redwood, NY, Susan Tripathy of Acton, MA, & Kathryn Orchard & husband Bradley of Chelmsford, MA; and father-in-law of Sylvia Strobel; grandfather of Jessica Calmes & husband Marc, Brian Thomson & fiancée Tyler Standish, Sheila & Aneil Tripathy, & Sarah Orchard & fiancé Luis Sordo Vieira, & Rachel & Samuel Orchard; great-grandfather of Peyton & Colton Calmes; and brother of Beth Murley of Lansing, MI. He was predeceased by a brother, Melvin Thomson, and a son-in-law, Sukant Tripathy.

A Memorial Service for Dr. Kenneth Thomson will be held on Saturday,October 24th at 11:00 am at The First Baptist Church of Penfield, located at 1862 Penfield Rd. in Penfield, New York. Ken and Shirley were active members of this church for the past 61 years, with Ken serving as both Deacon and Trustee.  In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial gifts to The Nature Conservancy, Attn: Treasury, 4245 N.
