Obituary for Robert J. "Swifty" Viola

MAYNARD: Robert J. Viola, 79, a lifelong Maynard resident, died peacefully Mon. Nov. 3, 2014 at the Life Care Center of Acton. He was the beloved husband of Carol A. (DeRosa) Viola, to whom he was married for over 48 years.

Born in Concord and raised in Maynard, he was the son of the late Patrick Viola and Josephine (Civitarese) Butler, and was the brother of the late Al Viola. Mr. Viola was a graduate of Maynard High School and served honorably as a Sergeant in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Northwestern University, where he studied history with a focus on education and played on the football team. Mr. Viola was a substitute teacher in the Maynard schools then worked for Prime Computer. He and his wife later founded Suburban Glass and Mirror in Maynard, which they owned and operated until 1984. He enjoyed fishing and working on home improvement and landscaping projects, and especially enjoyed watching football.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Craig Viola of Maynard, and Mark Viola and his wife, Carol, of Melrose; two grandchildren, Zoe and Zaden Viola; and extended family and many friends.

Visiting hours are Fri. Nov. 7th from 6-8pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. Funeral services will be held Sat. Nov. 8th at 12 noon at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
