Born in Dorchester and raised in Jamaica Plain, he was the son of the late Arthur J. and Frances (Sullivan) Jaehnig. He graduated from technical high school and was first employed at Maritime Welding in Allston. He enlisted in the US Navy during WWII, serving honorably aboard the USS Aquila, USS YMS-307 and USS Truxtun, and later on the USS Fort Mandan and USS Mellette during the Korean War.
