John Michael McMorrow
John Michael McMorrow, long-time resident of Sudbury died from Parkinson’s on Monday, March 19, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham, MA at the age of 89.
He was born on January 26, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY to Beatrice (Jennings) and Charles McMorrow who hailed from Co. Mayo and Co. Leitrim, Ireland. John was proud to have attended Catholic grammar school, high school and college. After graduating from St. John’s University in Queens, NY (B.A., Liberal Arts (Political Science and Economics) 1950), he served in the U.S. Army and subsequently earned a second degree from St. John’s University (B.B.A., Industrial Relations 1954).
John met his wife Alice at a dance at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Brooklyn and had an engagement ring on her finger only three months later. They wed May 8, 1954. Fifty years later they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a private mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Boston celebrated by the same priest who had baptized their first child Kevin Michael 49 years before at OLPH in Brooklyn.
John and Alice were blessed with four more children: Brian T. of Washington, Maureen P. of Massachusetts, John J. of California, and Elizabeth A. (Betsy) of Massachusetts. John loved his children and was grateful that he was also able to play a big role in his grandson Ryan Michael’s childhood from the time he was an infant. John has three other wonderful grandchildren: Brian’s son Kyle and John’s girls Camryn (Cammy) and Taylor who he always prayed for and loved dearly.
John was so happy to meet his great-grandson Declan Michael this past January. Despite facial muscle weakness from Parkinson’s, John gave Declan a triple kiss on the cheek and would not return Declan to his father Ryan.
During the course of his life, John and Alice lived in: New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, California and Zurich, Switzerland. They bought their house in Sudbury in 1981 and moved from Sudbury 31 years later. One of their favorite past times was working in the yard together. John wasn’t one for cut flowers but he was happy to plant a $1.99 rhododendron from Stop & Shop for Alice anytime.
He was very active at St. Caismir Catholic Church in Maynard, MA where he served as President of the Holy Name Society. He was blessed to have had his former pastor and friend Fr. Louis Bilicky residing with him at St. Patrick’s Manor.
John was an international business executive who worked for the United Fruit Company, Fafnir Bearing Company, Occidental Petroleum Corporation and BTR Inc. While he enjoyed working in Europe, the U.S. and South America, his heart was with his United Fruit colleagues in Central America. In his career in human resources and labor negotiations, John was known for his desire to develop and promote employees to benefit their careers and ultimately their families’ lives. This was especially true for the United Fruit Central America teams.
