Obituary for Elizabeth M. (Griffin) "Betty" Halvey
Elizabeth “Betty” Marie (Griffin) Halvey, 88, of Westford, MA, formerly of Needham and Everett, MA and West Hartford, CT, died peacefully on August 17, 2017. Born and raised in Everett, MA, Betty was the daughter of the late Timothy and Mary Griffin and sister to the late Frank Griffin, Claire Halpin and Dorothy MacDougall. She attended Everett High, and was a 1989 Phi Theta Kappa graduate of Greater Hartford Community College. Prior to having children Betty worked in personnel at Schrafft Corporation in Charlestown, MA. When her children were older she worked for over 20 year as an administrator and docent at the Noah Webster House in West Hartford, CT.
Betty met her future husband John, “Jackie,” in 1948 at a pavilion dance at Revere Beach. Betty and John courted for six years before marrying on May 29, 1954. They resided in Everett and had their first children: John and Mary. The family then moved to Needham, where Anne and Cathy were born. In 1963, the family moved to West Hartford, Connecticut where they resided for 51 years until Mr. and Mrs. Halvey moved to Westford in March 2014.
Betty was active in Mothers Circle at St Thomas Church in West Hartford, CT. She was an avid reader and belonged to several book clubs. She loved politics and John would ask her to please not discuss them at parties! She enjoyed playing tennis, golf and spending time with her family and entertaining.
In retirement, Betty loved to help care for the grandchildren which she did for several years commuting weekly to Boxborough. She and John thoroughly enjoyed family vacations in North Eastham on Cape Cod where they would golf, swim, play tennis and relax. John and Betty were formidable bridge players and played regularly with neighborhood friends. Betty also loved to paint and draw which she was able to do in her retirement
Betty was an accomplished pianist. She would play often with John standing behind her singing. Some of her favorite songs were “When Irish Eyes are Smiling,” “Puff the Magic Dragon," "I love You Truly," "Tip Toe Through the Tulips" and “By The Sea."
Betty was predeceased by her husband of sixty years, John (Jackie) Halvey; and survived by her son John Halvey Jr. of Burlington, VT; three daughters: Mary Halvey Dove and Bruce Dove of Boxborough, MA, Anne Halvey of West Hartford, CT and Catherine Biron and Emile Biron of Boxborough, MA; and four grandchildren: Christopher Dove, Samuel Harper, and Kyle and Molly Biron.
Calling hours are Tuesday August 22nd from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave, (Rte 111) Acton, MA. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday August 23rd at 10:00am at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 89 Arlington Street, Acton, MA. Burial will follow in South Cemetery, Burroughs Road, Boxborough, MA.
