Obituary for Peter S. Alling
Peter S. Alling, 80, of Marlborough, MA, former long time resident of Boxborough, MA, died on Tuesday, May 16, 2017.
Peter was the beloved husband of the late Frances M. (McCommons) Alling who died in 1987. He leaves his two sons, John S. Alling and his wife Linda of Durham, NC, David E. Alling of Boxborough, MA and his daughter, Jane A. Bresnahan and her husband Edward of Sudbury, MA. He is also survived by his three loving grandchildren, Meredith, Thomas and Robert Alling, all of Durham, NC; his brother, Guy E. Alling Jr. and his wife Barbara of Pawleys Island, SC; nieces, nephew and extended family.
Peter was born in Gardner, MA, son of the late Guy E. Alling Sr. and Catherine H. (Hemmerly) Alling. He was a 1954 graduate of Athol High School and later received his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Bates College, Lewiston, ME in 1958. He served in the National Guard and U.S. Army, being honorably discharged in1964. Peter worked for many years as a salesman for the Haartz Corporation of Acton, MA, a leading supplier of automotive topping fabrics. Since 2009, Peter resided at New Horizons in Marlborough, MA and previously in Boxborough, MA from 1976 to 2009. He was a member of the South Acton Congregational Church.
Peter enjoyed playing golf and spending time around the course. A dedicated sports fan, he followed the Boston Red Sox and Duke Blue Devils. He was interested in current events and looked forward to reading the daily newspaper. Throughout his life he cherished the love and affection he shared with his dogs.
He made many friends wherever he lived, including the Acton, Boxborough and New Horizons communities. Peter was active in supporting and coaching youth sports. In Boxborough, he served on the Recreation Commission, the Conservation Commission and the Council on Aging. Peter additionally furthered his community through committees at South Acton Congregation Church where he was a long time member.
Most of all Peter enjoyed spending time with his family including many fond memories through his life of trips to the beach. In recent years he treasured visits with his three grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visiting hours at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rt 111) Acton, MA 01720 will be held on Friday, May 19th from4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC at a later date.
