Obituary for Paul R. Murphy

Paul R. Murphy
Paul R. Murphy, 83, a lifelong Maynard, MA resident, died peacefully Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Emerson Hospital after a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of the late Virginia M. (Van Vorse) Murphy, to whom he was married for 57 years at the time of her passing in August, 2014.

Born in Concord and raised in Maynard, he was the son of the late Richard J. and Anna (Batulin) Murphy. A graduate of Maynard High School Class of 1951, he served honorably in the US Marine Corps in Okinawa during the Korean War. He later attended the University of Lowell and earned an engineering degree from Northeastern University. Mr. Murphy was employed in construction engineering for various area contractors, and worked for the Commonwealth of MA for 11 years and J.J. O’Brien and Sons in Waltham for over 11 years. In the 1970s he and friend Ralph Herrick owned and operated Herrick & Murphy, a surveying business. Mr. Murphy loved to work, and through the years and after his retirement he enjoyed surveying for area contractors, and working with friends part-time at the Acton Funeral Home and the former Martin & Doran Funeral Home.

Active in the community, Mr. Murphy was a life member and former chaplain of the Maynard Lodge of Elks #1568, and a member of the former American Legion Post # 235 in Maynard. He was a lifelong active member of St. Bridget’s Parish in Maynard, where he was an usher, and in younger years also attended services with his mother at the Holy Annunciation Orthodox Church in Maynard. He and his wife, Virginia, were among the founding members of the Maynard Booster Club.

Mr. Murphy is survived by two sons and their families: Michael Murphy, wife Barbara and their sons Kevin and Sean all of Maynard, and Paul Murphy and his children Kayleigh, Abigail, Erin, Brendan and Brynn all of Upton, MA; a sister Elena and husband Peter Chow of Clinton, CT; and extended family members and in-laws. He was the brother of the late Philip Murphy and Dorothea MacDonald.

Visiting hours are Thursday, May 4th from 4:00-8:00pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton, with the Maynard Lodge of Elks Lodge of Sorrows service at 7:00pm. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 5th at 10:00am in St. Bridget’s Church, 1 Percival St., Maynard with burial following in St. Bridget’s Cemetery, Great Rd (Rt 117) Maynard. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Maynard Booster Club, PO Box 438, Maynard, MA 01754. Memorial page
