Obituary for Carol J. (Farrell) Cooney
Carol J. (Farrell) Cooney of Leominster, MA formerly of Boxborough, MA died peacefully on April 23rd, 2017 at the age of 82 with her loving family at her bedside. She was preceded in death by her husband John G. Cooney of Boxborough, MA.
Carol was born January 5, 1935 in St. Paul, MN. Educated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, she graduated from Derham Hall High School and The College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, and earned a Master’s degree in Education from Worcester State College in Worcester, MA.While attending Derham Hall High School, she met her husband John G. Cooney on the street car on the way to school where John was attending nearby Cretin High. Upon graduating from college, the two married and were off to start their family and life together, moving to 6 states and having 6 children before settling down in Boxborough MA. While raising her 6 children Carol was active in the Acton Newcomers Club, Boxborough Garden Club and the Boxborough Grange. Among many accomplishments. Carol excelled in the needle arts and was an international award winning seamstress.
When her sixth child was enrolled in school full time, Carol attended Worcester State University at night to obtain her Masters of Education. Upon graduation, she began her 40 year career as an elementary and middle school teacher in the Ayer/Shirley Public Schools. While teaching, Carol made some life-long friends and together they enjoyed travelling the world, and as a voracious reader participated in their monthly book club. Carol’s passion for education didn’t end when she retired, she remained an active member of the NEA/MTA until her death. For 42 years, Carol would spend her summers at her little slice of heaven, Mascoma Lake in Enfield, NH where she would bring her children and grandchildren together for some quality beach time.
Carol leaves behind 6 children who will miss her dearly, John Cooney and his wife Cindy of St. Louis MO, James Cooney and his wife Jan of Windham, NH, Susan Cooney of Boxborough, MA, Jeanne Olson and her husband Kevin of Dunstable, MA, Eileen Stam and her husband Allan of Charlottesville, VA, and Mary Niles and her husband Michael of Winchendon, MA as well as 14 loving grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Sat. April 29th at 9:00 AM in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, 89 Arlington St, Acton, MA 01720. Burial will follow in South Cemetery, Burroughs Rd, Boxborough, MA. Please join us for a celebration of her life held from 12:00 PM until 3:00 PM at The Manor, 42 West Boylston Street West Boylston, MA 01583.
