Michael Massa, 90, of Sudbury, MA and longtime Maynard business owner, died Monday April 17, 2017 at CareOne of Concord with his family at his side. He was the beloved husband of over 65 years to Theresa P. (Carvotta) Massa.
Born in Torre del Greco, Naples, Italy, he was the son of the late Luigi and Angelina (Accardo) Massa. At the age of 18 he immigrated to the US with his family, and lived in East Boston for a time where they owned and operated a bakery. They then moved to Maynard where they established the former Massa's Bakery in downtown. A Sudbury resident for many years, Mr. Massa operated the bakery in Maynard until 1984, then worked at Triple A Market for the next few years before retiring. His family was everything to him; he was always cooking especially loved gathering the family together for Sunday dinners at his home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: Michelle Sawyer and husband Robert of Sudbury, Louis Massa and wife Lorie of Sterling, and Mary Barbagallo and husband Ed of Maynard. He was the father of the late Angela DeRosa, his oldest daughter, who passed away in 2005. He is also survived by his son-in-law Robert DeRosa; his grandchildren, Michael Sawyer and wife Tina, Jessica Barbagallo, Daniel Sawyer, Marycatherine Massa, Joseph Barbagallo, Emma Massa and Michaela Barbagallo; great-grandchildren Amber, Dean, Derrin amd Laila Sawyer; two sisters, Josephine Miele and Carmela Porfino both of Maynard; and nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Friday April 21st from 5:00-8:00pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rt 111) Acton. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday April 22nd at 10:00am in St. Bridget’s Church, 1 Percival St., Maynard, with burial following in St. Bridget’s Cemetery.
